Wayne Newton Post 346 got just the revenge they were looking for on Sunday afternoon, storming through their final four games with victories that included a pair on Sunday against the lone team to beat them in the state legion tourney.
Post 346 got key performances from both their offense and pitching in defeating Rockport Post 254, 13-2 and 13-0, to win the state title. Rockport is the same team which defeated Wayne Newton in the championship last season.
This year was a far different story however.
In the first game, Post 346 erupted for 10 runs in the fourth inning, getting a grandslam from infielder John Rosselli and a two run shot from Cole Vicars to post the victory. Skyler Pearson shut down Rockport on just six hits for the victory.
In the deciding game two, Post 346 got the power that they needed from familiar sources.
Northview graduate Brady Shoemaker punished the Rockport decision to walk Josh Phegley, who had homered in the first inning, to face him. Shoemaker ripped a grandslam homerun, his 18th of the summer, to effectively put the game out of reach on the way to the shutout victory.
Nick Ciolli and Brian Fisher combined on a two hit pitching performance.
Shoemaker was 3-for-5 in the nightcap with the grandslam and fellow Northview graduate, John Reberger, added two hits and an RBI. Shoemaker had 10 hits in his final 20 at-bats over the final four games of the tournament to help pace the squad to the championship.
The victories advances Wayne Newton Post 346 to a 30-5 mark overall and they will compete in the eight-team Great Lakes Regional held at Braun Stadium in Evansville's campus. Post 346 will face the Pennsylvania state champs on Thursday at 6 p.m.
