TERRE HAUTE -- The Northview Knights have had a successful summer leading into the fall golf season.
Coming off a team win at the Mustang Invitational last week and a third place finish at Mooresville on Monday, the Knights won their fourth consecutive Braves Invitational at Rea Park on Tuesday.
Paced by a pair of 79's from senior Millie Akers and junior Mary Beth Tribble, the Knights' Maroon squad shot a team 338 to easily outdistance second place Terre Haute South's 364 and Jasper's 374.
Linton senior Rachel Pruett repeated as individual champion with a round of 76 followed by Page Schroeder with Akers and Tribble shooting 79.
The Northview pair squared off in a playoff that was clearly more for fun between the two teammates than serious competition. "There wasn't really any tension at all," joked Akers following the round. "We were having fun out there," Akers said of her eventual win on the third hole with a par.
Both golfers parred the first hole before each got out of a bit of trouble to save par in the second playoff hole as well. On the par-3 third hole, Akers was able to get up and in from the fringe while Tribble two putted for a bogey.
"This team has a lot of fun," said Tribble of her Northview Knights. "Especially the seniors. We're just starting to show our potential. I think we've got a lot of room for improvement before sectional time."
Akers felt that she left some strokes on the course on the back nine despite her third place finish.
"I was pretty satisfied with my front nine, but I gave a lot back on the back nine," she commented. "I don't think that (the team) has played as well as we expected so far, but we'll keep improving."
That's bad news for upcoming opponents.
Akers and Tribble will get another shot at Pruett on Thursday as Northview faces the Miners and Cloverdale before returning home for their first meet at Forest Park against Jasper and Washington.
"We're looking forward to matching up with Jasper," said coach Teresa Akers. "They are in sort of the same situation we have. Their top three are pretty set but they have a large group of girls to choose from. They have 18 on their team and we have 12. We're pretty excited to have five good, athletic freshman on our team."
Madison Kirchner came in with a team, third place score of 86 for the Knights followed by a 94 from Kayla Cooper and a 125 from Olivia Oehler.
On Monday at Mooresville, the Knights got a 74 from Tribble who tied for second place behind Pruett's 72, on the way to a team score of 345. Brownsburg was the winner with a team score of 319 followed by a 323 from Brebeuf.
Akers shot an 82 followed by Kirchner's 84, a 105 from Cooper and a 136 from Oehler in the 17-team field.
Tribble scored four birdies in her round and had just 25 putts in her third place finish.
