The Clay City Eels kicked off their volleyball season in strong fashion, beating perennial nemesis, Union, in a five set marathon, 25-17, 19-25, 25-14, 23-25, 15-12.
"Playing Union and beating them in the first game is a big deal, commented first year Clay City coach LuAnne Anderson. "For the seniors, they've never beaten them since they've been in high school so its good for them to get the monkey off their back."
Junior Ashley McCullough was a big part of the Eels' collaring of the Bulldogs, providing 21 kills, 13 service point with three aces and seven blocks. Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that Sarah Kennedy was right their at the net, drilling home 19 kills of her own while Angie Camp added eight.
Setting up the offense was Courtney Dayhuff who got 44 assists in the game. Kendra Roe served up four aces as part of a 12 point night and Kennedy added 11 points with an ace.
In the JV game, the Eels were two set winners, 25-14, 25-6 and were led by Shelby Targett's 10 point, three kill evening along with Brittney Glass' seven kills and two points.
The Eels will hit the road for a match against South Putnam tonight.
