Unlike most other fall sports, the girls golf season is headed into the stretch run already and apparently, Northview's Knights are beginning to get healthy at just the right time.

After missing Abby Smith for nearly the entire season due to a back injury, she has returned to the lineup and is being worked into the regular rotation slowly by head coach Teresa Akers.

Smith immediately gives the Knights more depth to their already talented and experienced lineup.

"We've been planning this lineup since these girls were freshman," Akers commented after Thursday's match with Terre Haute North and South. "We've been preparing these girls to play together as seniors and now that we've finally gotten Abby back, the plan is working."

A team that has already made several trips to the state finals together, continues to gel this season and against the Braves and Patriots, just missed the school team record for nine holes at Forest Park.

Senior Millie Akers led the way with her 37 followed by a 38 from junior Mary Beth Tribble and senior Madison Kirchner. The team scoring was rounded out by Smith's 45 and a 46 from Kayla Cooper.

The rounds allowed the Knights to best visiting Terre Haute South's 181 and North's 185.

Sloan Engle led the Braves with a 44 and Amy Hutts had a 44 for the Patriots.

"It seems like each of the girls is struggling a bit with something different," commented Akers. "Mary Beth wasn't happy with her greens in regulation and Millie is working on improving her putting, but Abby and Kayla are really improving and that's huge for us," said Akers.

Smith, who has been given a medical waiver to ride in a cart for her rounds due to her past injury, has been improving her swing consistency and showed Thursday, the promise that awaits down the road.

"Having Abby back is a big bonus for us," noted Akers. "Our kids are all working hard and we'll see some of the state's best teams this weekend at the Hall of Fame Tournament."

The Knights also got rounds of 48 from JV players Savannah Pursell and 49 from Olivia Oehler as well as a 50 from varsity golfer Mandy Tomlinson.

Next up for Northview is a trip to Otter Creek Golf Course for Saturday's Hall of Fame Tournament.
