Knights shutdown Mustangs air attack

ELLETTSVILLE -- With both teams coming off explosive offensive games last week, Northview's in a victory, Edgewood's in a 44-20 loss, fans might have been expecting a high scoring affair.

The Northview defense took care of any hopes the Mustangs might have had of repeating their school record passing performance last week (355 passing yards, 213 receiving yards by Scott Pederson).

The Knights completely shutdown the Mustangs air game and Pederson, holding Edgewood to just 43 passing yards and kept Pederson to just two receptions in a 42-0 whitewashing on Friday night.

"I like the aggressiveness of our defense and the way we're flying around to the ball," commented head coach George Gettle after the team's first blanking since a 26-0 win over Brown County in 2004. "We're really getting after people."

Indeed, Mustang quarterback Rob Moynihan will likely have nightmares about linebacker Chris Dean who caused a pair of fumbles, one recovered by Dayne Upperman and another by sophomore Tony Fabbri. Both came in the first half which the Knights controlled on both sides of the ball.

Following Upperman's recovery, the Knights needed just three plays to march 31 yards for a score, getting a 26 yard run by quarterback Miller and a one-yard plunge for a TD and a 7-0 lead.

In their next drive, spanning the first and second quarters, Northview put together a time consuming 12 play possession that was capped by a 20-yard TD reception by Chase Yocom from Miller. Jered Timm and Miller highlighted the drive with a 22 yard run and an 18 yard run respectively as Northview pushed their lead to 14-0.

The Knights' defense stood tall on Edgewood's next drive, putting them in a third-and-8 position at midfield. On the snap, Dean flew through the center of the line and hammered Moynihan, forcing the fumble and Fabbri's recovery.

On the first play of the Northview possession, Miller found Yocom on a 40 yard bomb and Miller ran the ball in for a seven yard score on the following play.

"Broc does a good job running the offense for us," said Gettle. "As a coaching staff, maybe we have to look at how we use him on defense and whether that's for the best," he said in regards to perhaps overusing Miller.

Leading by three scores at halftime, the Knights kept their jaws tight on the squirming Mustang's throats.

The Knights got the opening kick, and despite turning the ball over on downs, pushed the Mustangs into their own territory.

Edgewood moved to midfield on a long run by David Walcott, but on the following play he was rocked for a nine yard loss in the backfield. After an incompletion, lineman Joe Evinger perhaps sealed the coffin shut when he snared an errant pass for an interception and rumbled down to Edgewood's 22-yard line.

From there, a pair of 11 yard runs by Timm did the scoring damage putting the Knights up 28-0 and setting the cruise control.

Jordan Keller ended Edgewood's next drive with a sack that put the Mustangs in a fourth-and-8 position to keep the shutout intact. Tyler Coltharp was the recipient of a scoring pass from Miller five yards later and opening the fourth quarter, Yocom grabbed his second Miller pass for a TD with 8:02 left in the game.

Dylan Kruse stoodout along with Chris Dean on defense, adding up eight solo tackles, five assists and a knock down for the Knights.

On offense, the Knights ripped the Mustangs for over 300 yards rushing, paced by Timm's 139 yards, but Albert Dean ran strong for 71 more and Miller contributed 62 yards on the ground.

"Hats off to (Albert) Dean and (Jered) Timm," commented Gettle following the game. "Dean really stepped up his running this week and Timm just keeps getting better."

The Knights hope to build upon their success when they tangle with rival Terre Haute North on the road at 7 p.m.
