Bessie Gorman Austin, 69, of Brazil, died at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at Clay Health Center where she resided since November 1997.

She was born July 18, 1933, in Parke County, the daughter of Paris and Ethel Gorman, who preceded her in death. Her stepmother, Ruth Summers Gorman Brown, who also preceded her in death, raised her.

She married Richard A. Austin April 5, 1962. He preceded her in death June 17, 1999.

She was a member of Community Bible Chapel in Manhattan. She previously helped her husband with the Grit paper route.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Larry Eugene Gorman; one brother, Robert Gorman; her twin sister, Essie Gorman; three other sisters, Lorene McIntyre, Mary and Helen Gorman.

Surviving are one granddaughter, Susanne Gorman of Carbon; five sisters, Irene Stultz of Brazil, Florence Eaglin and husband Earl of Brazil, Alice Weddle and husband John of Brazil, Virginia Jane Walton and husband Herb of Brazil and Vada Lynn Oxby and husband John of Princeton, Ind., and several other extended family members.

Services will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Lawson-Slack Funeral Home with visitatioin from 1 p.m. till service time. Steve Brattain will officiate. Burial will be at Putnamville Cemetery.
