V. Gladys Slavens Sumner, 81, of Terre Haute, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at Union Hospital, Terre Haute.
She was born in Whitley, Ky., on May 22, 1921. She was the daughter of Ewell and Laura B. Spradlin Slavens, who preceded her in death.
She worked at Simplicity Patterns for eight years and at Columbia Records for a little over 10 years.
She received special recognition from the state of Indiana for her quilting skills.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Samuel Thomas Sumner in 1998; one brother, Avery Slavens; one sister, Cora Sumner Rowings, and one grandson, Bruce Vanatti in 2003.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda Vanatti and husband John of Terre Haute, Sandy Sears and husband Jerry of Terre Haute and Virginia Cash of Rosedale, Ind.; two sisters, Dora Perry of Whitley and Flonnie Mae Matthews of Sterns, Ky.; five grandchildren, Laura Cash, Cherri Rutan, Thomas Rudolph, Rita Southern and John S. Vanatti; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Herb officiating. Visitation is from 11 to time of service. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park.
