Betty M. Marks, 76, Brazil, died early Monday morning, June 16, 2003, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
She was born on March 21, 1927, the daughter of Homer Warpenburg and May Meadows Warpenburg.
She was a 1945 graduate of Brazil High School, where she was active in drama and composed her class song.
She married John Marks in 1947. They lived in Churubusco before moving to Speedway and then to Bethesda, Md. After he died in 1965, she returned to Brazil.
She was in the insurance business for 50 years, starting with local agencies. She eventually began her own agency, Shelter Insurance, and attended Indiana State University, majoring in education.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Brazil, Clay County Rural Youth and Home Economics Club. She also served on the Brazil Housing Authority for many years. She loved attending reunions and visiting friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister, Mary Lucille Thomas.
Surviving are her two sons and their wives, Joe and wife Debbie, Deerfield, Ill., and Jim and wife Vicci, Brazil; one sister and her husband, Josephine and Charles "Red" Hammond, Jeffersonville; four grandchildren, Jon and Amy of Deerfield, Collette of Terre Haute, and Tress of Brazil; six great-grandchildren, Ashley, Cody, Kendall, Gage, Meghan and Tyler; one brother-in-law and wife, Mose and Margaret Marks, Brazil; one sister-in-law and husband, Mary Lou and Howard Walker, Indianapolis; nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Miller Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Ron Thomas will officiate, and interment will be in Calcutta Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
