Joyce C. Cooper, age 73, of Brazil died at 3 a.m. Friday, July 4, 2003, at her residence after an extended illness.
She was born in Clay Co. on June 23, 1930, the daughter of Andrew Jackson and Susan Melinda Burk Moberley who preceded her in death.
She graduated from Brazil High School in 1948 and on Dec. 31, 1949, she married William Eugene Cooper in Brazil. He preceded her in death on Feb. 9,1990.
After graduation, she was employed at O'Briens Law Office in Terre Haute and was a Clay County Deputy Recorder from 1976-1984.
A homemaker, she enjoyed sewing , cooking, fishing and mushroom hunting. The wife of a sailor, she was very proud of her sons who both served in the Navy. She was an active member of PETA and the Humane Society.
She was preceded in death, also, by a brother, David Moberley, five sisters, Ruth Lavery, Nina Warren, Zeda Fredricks, Mabel Davis and Edna Young.
Survivors include two sons, George Edward Cooper and wife Melinda of Indianapolis, Todd Jacob Cooper and wife Linda of Staunton; two daughters Martha Rita Sappingfield and husband William of Terre Haute, Susan Melinda White and husband David of Brazil; three sisters, Eunice Collins of Morresburg, Tenn., Aretha Thomas of Carbon, Ilene Newcomb of Indianapolis; grandchildren, George Cooper Jr., Carrie Anne Sappingfield, Dianne Cooper, Adam Cooper; 10 great grandchildren, a dear friend Karen Guthrie and family and several other extended family members.
Visitation will be today, from 4-8 p.m., at Lawson-Slack Funeral Home.
Services will be on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Tom Hess officiating. Burial will follow at Calcutta Cemetery.
