Carolyn E. Swayze, 82, of Coal City, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, at 12:50 p.m. at her home.
She was born on April 25, 1921, in Coal City. The daughter of Irvin P. and Marion Wolford Hilburn who preceded her in death.
A 1939 graduate of Coal City High School, she continued her education at Indiana State Teachers College, graduating in 1943. She began a teaching career at Lyons, Ind., for three years and then transferred to Martinsville, Ind., where she taught for a few years. She was also a substitute teacher in Lawrence, Ind.
She married Dennis Swayze on March 31, 1946, in Bloomfield, Ind. He survives.
She was a member of Pleasant Hill Community Church in Spencer and a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 141 in Coal City, Clay City Eastern Star No. 355 and the Gideon Auxiliary.
She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, gardening and artwork.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Rosemary Fitzpatrick.
Other survivors include one daughter, Lynette Whittington and husband Rick of Coal City; two sons, Richard Swayze and wife Kathryn of Davison, Mich., and Michael Swayze and wife Karen of Avon, Ind., and 12 grandchildren, Tony, Erin, Kurt, Grant, Abby, Gail, Anna and Alex Swayze, Clayton Burrus, Andrew Whittington and Nicole and Angela Cervo.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, Clay City, with the Rev. Tim Williams and the Rev. Artie Carnes officiating. Burial will be in Beech Cemetery, Coal City. Visitation will be today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Owen County Gideon Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
