Mary Catherine Carmichael Arthur Combs, 93, of Brazil passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at Holly Hill Health Care where she had resided since Sept. 15, 1999.
She was born May 2, 1910 to Clareance Carmichael and Pearl Henry in Bloomfield, Ind. She was a member of the first cosmetology class in Indiana in 1935 and worked as a beautician in Indianapolis, Bloomfield, Spencer and Sullivan, Ind.
She married Gail Combs in 1940 and in 1948 they opened The Western Auto Store in Sullivan. In 1961 they moved to Brazil and operated The Western Auto Store with their son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Betty Arthur. The couple spent many enjoyable winters in Florida and traveled on several Western Auto trips. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority in Sullivan, a 50-year member of the Order of The Eastern Store 425 in Spencer and the Bloomfield First Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy and Edith Mansfield; a brother, Francis "Dutch" Carmichael; twin brothers, Lloyd and Floyd Carmichael; and her parents.
Survivors are her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Betty Arthur of Brazil; two grandaughters, Nancy Pell and her husband Dan of Brazil and Susan Arthur of Encinitas, Calif.; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Forest Carmichael and his wife Martha of Cape Coral, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Sybil Carmichael of Springfield, Mo.; a niece, Betty Barr of Cape Coral, Fla.; a nephew, Jim Stone of Indianapolis; and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield. The service will be conducted by Rev. Billy Ed Hostettler. The place of burial will be Grandview Cemetery in Bloomfield.
