Rexford Gleason Puckett, 87, Brazil, died at 7:40 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, in the emergency room of Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
He was born on May 26, 1916, in Bicknell, son of the late Rev. Fred Puckett and Gertrude Terry Puckett. He married Cleo Hunter Puckett in Jasonville on June 7, 1937, with the Rev. Charles Stanifer presiding.
From 1947 to 1984, he owned and operated a shoe repair shop in Brazil. He was an avid golfer and bowler and enjoyed pitching horseshoes.
He was a member of the Way of the Cross Assembly of God Church, where he was active in the church as treasurer and board member. He also provided music for the services, playing guitar, banjo and omnichord.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Puckett and, in infancy, Freddie Puckett.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Marcelle and Larry Byrd, Terre Haute, and Myrna R. and Ron Smith, Effingham, Ill.; two sisters, Lena Grigsby, New Castle, and Betty McWilliams, Union City, Tenn.; two brothers and their wifes, Jerry and Joyce Puckett, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Don and Sharon Puckett, Richmond; six grandchildren, Mark Byrd, Lance Byrd and wife Tabitha, Karen Wright and husband Jamie, Lori Collings and husband Frank, Gregg Smith and wife Teresa and Julie Thompson and husband Mark; three great-grandchildren, Zachary and Austin Byrd and Alexis Thompson; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Miller Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Dowers officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memoria Park, Terre Haute. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the VistaCare Foundation or the Way of the Cross Assembly of God Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.
