Chester "Chuck" Sanders, 79, of Brazil died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at 10:45 a.m. at Healthsouth Rehabilitation in Terre Haute.

Born Jan. 24, 1924, in Clay County, the son of Charles and Mabel Jordan Sanders.

He retired as a professor at Indiana State University in 1986. He graduated from Brazil High School, class of 1942 and attended Ball State for one year, later graduating from Indiana University in 1946.

He played on the 1945 Big Ten Football championship team and began his teaching career at Hobart, Ind., as a football coach, also coaching at Edison High School and Clinton High School.

He taught at Wabash College, also coaching football and wrestling. He began teaching at Indiana State University in 1959, also serving as an assistant football coach and he started the wrestling program there.

He was inducted into the Indiana Wrestling Hall of Fame and refereed the NCAA Wrestling Championship several years.

Memberships included the Brazil Elks Lodge, serving as Past Exalted Ruler; was a member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight and was a horse enthusiast, breeding Arabian horses.

He enjoyed golf and coaching CYO basketball, baseball and football.

Survivors include his wife Anne McCullough Sanders, whom he married May 12, 1978; his children, Tim and Margie Sanders, Teresa and J. Blaine Akers, all of Brazil, Tom and Kelly Sanders of Las Vegas, Nev.; Dr. Tony and Christine Sanders of Columbus, Ind.; step-children, Michael Redenbarger of Bloomington, Kay McCloud of Raleigh, N.C., Sam and Holly Redenbarger, Ted Redenbarger and Andrew Redenbarger, all of Brazil, Tim Redenbarger of Bull Head City, Ariz; 17 grandchildren, Gregory Sanders, Nicholas Sanders, Trevor Akers, Tyler Akers, Millie Akers, Austin Akers, Paul Parsons, Thomas Sanders, Ash Lee Sanders, Matthew Sanders, Joshua Sanders, Kinsey Sanders, Katelyn Sanders, Caroline Sanders, Melissa Sanders, Anthony Sanders, Madelyn Sanders; step-grandchildren, Ben McCloud, Ross McCloud, Brandon Redenbarger, Richard Redenbarger, Bryan Redenbarger, Isacc Redenbarger and Jacob Redenbarger; two great-grandchildren, Thomas Sanders III and Taylor Parsons; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Norma Sanders; mother-in-law Mary G. McCullough of Brazil; brother-in-law Jerry McCullough and wife Phyllis of Bloomington and Tom McCullough of Brazil; sisters-in-law Janet John of Brooklyn, N.Y., Patty Cornforth and husband Richard of Indianapolis, Sharon Anderson and husband Bob of Vincennes; several nieces and nephews and a large extended family.

He was preceded in death by his father Charles Sanders and step-mother Ruth Sanders; and mother Mabel Sanders Pearce and step-father John Pearce; his first wife Edith Maxine Riley Sanders in 1974; a son Rex Sanders in 1948; a brother Charles Sanders and a sister Mildred Beason.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Annunciation Church with Farther Rob Hausladen officiating. Burial will follow in Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 p.m. at French Funeral Home and again Saturday from 7:30-10:45 a.m.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or to Annunciation School.
