Michael W. Rokicki, 60, of Greencastle, Ind., died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003.
Born in New Bedford, Mass., on Dec. 14, 1942, he was the son of Walter Joseph Rokicki (deceased) and Mary Rosario Medeiros Rokicki. A graduate of Dartmouth High School, Dartmouth, Mass., he moved to Terre Haute in 1963 and attended Indiana State University, earning a B.S. degree in Speech and Political Science in 1967.
On Aug. 25, 1967, he married Phyllis Ross and continued to live in Terre Haute, where they had two children, Michael Ryan and Gretl Rokicki Plessinger.
He began his career with Western and Southern Life Insurance in Terre Haute. In 1976, the family moved to Greencastle, Ind., where he opened his business as a State Farm agent which continues as Rokicki Insurance and Financial Services.
He was a member of the St. Paul the Aspostle Catholic Church in Greencastle.
He was also a member and past president of the Greencastle City Council for 12 years, a board member of the Putnam County Foundation, member and past president of the Putnam County United Way, member and past president of Greencastle Rotary Club, member and past president of Greencastle Lion's Club, past member and president of the Greencastle Jaycees, board member of Putnam County Comprehensive services, member of the NAACP, member of the Greencastle/Putnam County Development Center, founder and member of the Friends of the Library, Putnam County Youth Development Commissioner, member of the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, advisory board member for the Greencastle High School ICE program, board member for the Putnam County Sheriff Merit Board, member and past president of Wabash Valley Officials Association, member and past president of West Central Indiana Life Underwriter's Association, committee member for the Indiana Professional Standards Board License Review Committee, member of the West Central Civil War Round Table and a member of the Putnam County Mental Health Association.
His service to his community was widely recognized. He was awarded the Putnam County Mental Health Person of the Year Award in 1992. In 2002, he received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award bestowed by the Governor of the State of Indiana and was awarded the Citizen of the Year Award by the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce in 2002.
His philanthropic practices provided financial assistance to the school corporations throughout Putnam County and numerous community organizations through their fund-raisers.
He was a passionate supporter of sporting activities for youth and adults throughout the city and county. In addition, he was an official for the Indiana High School Athletic Association for basketball, baseball, softball and football. He donated much of his time officiating for social and youth sports and the Special Olympics.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Ross Rokicki; a son, Michael Ryan Rokicki and wife Mary of New Market, Md.; a daughter, Gretl Rokicki Plessinger and husband Chris of Tallahassee, Fla.; his mother, Mary Rosario Medeiros Rokicki, of Greencastle; a sister, Sister Joan Rokicki, RSM, of Providence, R.I.; three grandchildren, Steven Rokicki, Danielle Layne and James.
Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 202 E. Washington St., Greencastle.
Calling will be held 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, 602 W. Washington St., Greencastle.
Donations may be made to the Rokicki Foundation, c/o Putnam County Foundation, 2 S. Jackson St., Greencastle, IN 46135. This foundation will be used to benefit the youth of Putnam county.
