James E. "Jim" Spelbring, 74, of Poland, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at Healthsouth Rehabilitation Hospital in Terre Haute.
Born April 19, 1929, in Owen County, he was the son of Ray Edward and Nina Hunsicker Spelbring.
He graduated from Brazil High School, Class of 1947 and was a self-employed farmer. he raised feeder cattle, pigs and was a grain farmer in the Poland area. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, country line dancing and restored several Farmall tractors. He owned and operated the Poland Hardware Store until his health problems became too difficult.
Memberships included the Poland Zion United Church of Christ, the Brazil Elks Lodge, where he was the Past Exalted Ruler in 1989, and Indiana Farmers Union.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Spelbring of Bowling Green; a daughter, Jacqueline and her husband Dr. Michael Dalton; their mother, Alma Clutter Spelbring Frost, all of Brazil; a grandson, Dr. Jerad Dalton and his fiancee, Dr. Darla Moody, of Louisville, Ky.; a granddaughter, Ashley Dalton of Milwaukee, Wis.; a sister, Joetta Lucas and her husband Don of Brazil; a brother, Dr. Dan Spelbring and his wife, Peggy of Chicago; a brother-in-law James E. Clutter and wife Marjean of Plainfield; a special friend, Sue Vanzo of Diamond; several aunts, nieces, nephews and a large extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Joni Kay Spelbring; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Wayne Trout; a sister-in-law Esther Trout; and mother-in-law Ruth Ervin.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Poland Chapel with Pastor Paul Zurcher and the Rev. Kenneth Scherry officiating. Burial will follow in Poland Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 4-8 p.m. at French Funeral Home and Tuesday at 10 a.m until time of services at the Poland Chapel.
