Joan Wedel Nayarkas, 78, of Brazil, formerly of Terre Haute, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003 at Cloverleaf Healthcare Facility.

She was born July 13, 1925, in Clay County, the daughter of Ernest and Ruth Tiefel Wedel. She graduated from Brazil High School and worked at Indiana State University as a secretary in the athletic department. She retired shortly after marrying Tony Nayarkas in June of 1958.

She became an avid gardener and loved to knit. She took up oil painting and became an excellent painter and she did ceramics until 2000.

She was also a member of the First Christian Church in Brazil. She was also a member of a garden club and birthday club for many years in Terre Haute.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, a niece, a great-nephew, a brother-in-law and her mother-in-law.

Survivors include one brother, Robert L. Wedel and wife Jo of Brazil; three sisters, Arline Anderson and husband Donald of Brazil, Sandra Atkinson and husband John of Knightsville and Sharon Hoffman of Brazil; eight nephews; 10 nieces; 13 great-nephews; 18 great-nieces; nine great-great-nephews and 12 great-great-nieces.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Roselawn Chapel of Memories in Terre Haute, with Brother Greg Comp officiating. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Chapel.

French Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Heart Association.
