Jacob F. "Jake" Hirt III, 78, of Greencastle, passed away Saturday evening at the Putman County Hospital.
He was born on Nov. 4, 1925, in Greencastle, to Jacob F. Hirt II and Thelma (Koessler) Hirt. He was a graduate of the Greencastle High School class of 1943. On Dec. 24, 1944, he married Mary Mace who survives.
He had been a self employed retail merchant in Greencastle. He was a member of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church, the Greencastle Bowling Hall of Fame, the Putnam County Hospital Guild, a charter member and past president of the Windy Hill Country Club, a charter member of the Indianapolis Zoological Society and White River Gardens and an RSVP volunteer. He had also worked many years as a bus driver and later was the superintendent of the transportation department for the Greencastle School District.
His parents and a brother, Robert Louis Hirt, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jacob F. Hirt IV of Lebanon and Mace Hirt and wife Janna of Texas; a daughter, Pamela Schafer of Ariz.; two sisters, Avery Wayne Wampler and husband Philip of Amo and Martha Ann Newkirk and husband William of Plainfield and seven grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m.
Private graveside services will be held at a later date.
