Mona Ila Russell, 80, of Brazil, died at 4:37 a.m., Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, in Clay Health Center, where she had been a patient for the past year and a half.
Born May 15, 1923, in Clay County, she was the daughter of Cyril and Leatha Brown Gard and was a graduate of Glenn High School.
She owned and operated her own catering business, the first in Clay County.
She was known throughout Clay and Vigo counties for her wedding planning skills and the expertly decorated cakes she created for all occasions. She also worked as a home-based companion for several notable Terre Haute residents.
She was married to Charles Russell and J.O. Thompson, both of whom preceded her in death.
Memberships included North Union Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star.
Her parents; a brother, Charles Gard; a sister, Ruth Ann Gard Marshall; both husbands; and a grandson, Charles Josef Nicklasch, preceded her in death.
Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Ann Russell and husband, Bruce Berger, of Denver, Colo., Margaret Bowman and husband, Gary, of Brazil, and Sally Nicklasch and husband, Bernie, of Brazil; a brother, Raymond, and his wife, Janet Gard, of Terre Haute; nine grandchildren, Shelley Bowman Mace, David Bowman, Christopher Bowman, Anna Bowman, Mark Nicklasch, Maria Nicklasch, Justin Anderson, Brent Berger and Andrew Berger; and a great-grandchild, Van C. Mace, also survive her.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today at Moore Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. John Holwerda officiating. Burial will follow in Clearview Cemetery.
