Margretta Raper Cassel, 104, of Brazil died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1003, in her residence.
Born June 4, 1899, in Clay County, she was the daughter of John and Martha Margretta Morgan Stevenson.
A graduate of Brazil High School, she owned The Brazil Daily Times and the Monticello Herald newspapers in her lifetime.
She was a bookkeeper and an accomplished businesswoman. At the time of her death, she was was a member of Tri-Kappa Associates.
She was a past member of the Brazil Business and Professional Women, Brazil First Presbyterian Church, was active in the Republican Party, was the first woman to serve on the Indiana State Fair Board; and was a generous benefactor to many Clay County organizations.
She donated the building that is home to the community theater.
She enjoyed traveling and lived in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area of Florida for many years.
Survivors include Mary Katherine Thomas of Brazil; four nieces, Gretta Sue Vanzo of Rosedale, Ind., Pattie Toffolo of Terre Haute, Joyce Mercer of Bradenton, Fla., and Martha Johnson of Terre Haute; many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews; and her loyal caregivers, Ruth Haas, Jeannie Patrick, Delores Clark, Alma Frost, Angie Malicoat, Jared and Jackie Chastain, Joyce Mercer and Hazel Martin.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Raper; their two children, Martha Jane Raper and Jimmy raper; her second husband, John Cassel; two brothers, Will Stevenson and John Stevenson; three sisters, Ann White, Frieda Mershon and Elizabeth Rojahn.
Services will be today at 1 p.m. in French Funeral Home with Gary Scroggins officiating. Burial will be in Cottage Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
