Wayne Richard Clayton, 82, of Terre Haute, died at 12:38 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, in Union Hospital, Terre Haute.
Born Dec. 26, 1921, at West Terre Haute, he was the son of James Edward "Ted" and Flora Belle Davison Clayton.
He was a retired coal miner with the United Mine Workers of America, having worked in several mines in the Terre Haute area.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he served with the Seabees attached to the Third Marine Division in the South Pacific.
Memberships included Masonic Lodge 687 F&AM, life membership in the American Legion Post 501 and the Young Men's Club, all at West Terre Haute, and the Scottish Rite Valley, the Zorah Shrine Temple, the Kerman Grotto and the YMCA Young at Hearts Swim Club, all of Terre Haute.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Elaine Clayton.
Survivors include a son, Fred Clayton, of Carmel, Ind.; three daughters, Linda Goodrich of Brazil, Karren Greene of Palestine, Ill. and Kathy Clayton of Terre Haute, Ind.; a brother, Oriean Clayton of Wawaka, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Janetta B. "Sis" Moilanen; and five brothers, Harold, Robert, Ben, Jim and Raymond Clayton.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home with eulogy recited by his daughter, Karren Greene. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park with Military Graveside Rites by VFW Post 6574.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. tonight with a Masonic memorial service at 7 p.m. by Lodge 687. There will also be visitation from noon to service time Thursday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Crippled Childrens Hospitals with envelopes available in the funeral home.
