Esther Ann Woollard Butler, 88, of Greencastle, Ind., and formerly of Brazil, died at 10:13 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Asbury Towers in Greencastle. She had been in failing health for the past few years.
Born July 3, 1915, in Patricksburg, Ind., she was the daughter of Charles and Allie Kitch Woollard and the step-daughter of Rula Rice Woollard.
She married Lochel Butler on Nov. 11, 1934; he preceded her in death on Jan. 20, 1987.
She graduated from VanBuren High School, where her father was principal, and from Indiana State University, where she earned both bachelors and masters degrees in education.
She lived and taught in Clay County for many years before moving to Asbury Towers in Putnam County.
Memberships included Otterbein United Methodist Church, south of Bowling Green, and Harmony United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two children, John C. Butler and Ann Butler Tillotson; a son-in-law, Don Tillotson; and four sisters; Hildra Deisher, Clare Powell, Barbara Girton and Alice Proud.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Bedwell Butler; grandchildren, J.C. Butler and wife, Helen, of Cleveland, Ohio, Jana Becker and husband, John, of Greencastle and Jennifer Henke and husband, Andy, of Evansville; great-grandchildren, Luke and Clark Becker and Clara and Griffin Butler.
Private graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Fairview Cemetery with Pastor Bob Kumpf officiating.
