James R. Buell, 89, of Greencastle, formerly of Staunton, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Cloverleaf Healthcare Facility at 8:35 p.m. He had been a resident there since the first of January.
He was born May 9, 1914, in Clay County, the son of Charles Ross Buell and Nettie Lee Gregory Buell.
He graduated from Staunton High School, Class of 1932. He attended Purdue University.
He was a Minor League Baseball player for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and continued the love of baseball all of his life.
He worked at Allisons in Indianapolis, retiring after 31 years. He was a member of Masons F & AM Knightsville Lodge No. 409 for 63 years.
He attended Big Walnut Baptist Church and Staunton Christian Church. In his retirement years, he found great enjoyment in watching his grandchildren in their chosen sporting events.
He is survived by one son, Alan Buell and wife Donna of Brazil; one daughter, Jannette Roberts and husband Bob of Greencastle; one daughter-in-law, Sharon Buell Miller; seven grandchildren, Scott Buell and wife Kasey, Bethany Buell, Jeff Buell and wife Michelle, Marty Buell and wife Joni, Joni Sutherland and husband Marc, Nathan Roberts and Kyle Roberts; and six great-grandchildren, Foster Buell, Sydney Buell, Sophia Buell, Lainy Buell, J.D. Buell and A.J. Buell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pauline McKinney Buell in 1988; their son, James Buell Jr. in 1995; and a grandson, Jason Roberts, in 1982.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Miller Memorial Chapel with Brother Doug Parkey officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of service.
The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Jim Buell Scholarship Fund.
