James E. Shafer, 65, of Greencastle, died Monday afternoon, Feb. 16, 2004, at the Putnam County Hospital.
He was born Jan. 24, 1939, in Douglas County, Ill., the son of the Rev. Wilbur and Blanche Crawford Shafer. On Nov. 23, 1965, he married Sandra Winters and she survives.
He was a graduate of the Greencastle High School class of 1957 and served in the United States Army.
He worked at R.R. Donnelley and Sons in Crawfordsville, retiring in 1994. He also spent many years dealing in real estate with the SIMM's Realty and Jones Realty and worked with referrals with Tucker Realty.
He was a member of the Apostolic Faith Tabernacle in Cloverdale. He loved his family, his church and going to auctions and yard sales.
Survivors also include two sons, David E. Shafer and wife Cathy and Daniel L. Shafer and wife Renee; two daughters, Joanna Spencer and husband Mick and Susanna Shafer; a brother, the Rev. John R. Shafer and wife Rebecca; three sisters, Lois R. Shafer, Patricia Shafer and Ruby Patterson; and five grandchildren.
His parents; two brothers, Robert Joseph and Donald Wayne Shafer; and a sister, Elsie Marlar, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Apostolic Faith Tabernacle, Cloverdale.
Friends may call today from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home in Greencastle.
