He was born Feb. 15, 1936, in Montezuma, to James D. and Elvie M. Farris Smith. On April 4, 1958, he married Linda M. Dodson Smith; she survives.
He was a sheet metal worker for R and H Sheet Metal in Oaklandon.
Other survivors include two sons, James E. Smith Jr. of Indianapolis and Edward Smith of Whiteland; three daughters, Beverly Layne and Delores McIntire of Brazil and Rose Smith of Indianapolis; three brothers, Ernest Smith of Georgia, Kevin Smith of Greenwood and William Smith of Indianapolis; one sister, Mary Hargis of Kentucky; 24 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Lawson-Slack Funeral Home, with visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today. Burial will be in Calcutta Cemetery.
