Ralph Ernest Knowles, 91, of Harmony, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at Cloverleaf Healthcare Facility.

He was born Dec. 12, 1912, in Brazil, the son of Onnie Curtis Knowles and Bertha Clara Craig Knowles.

Following high school, he entered the U.S. Army, serving three different tours of duty. On Sept. 11, 1948, he married Mary Margaret Knowles; she preceded him in death in 2002.

He worked as an electrician and installed television antennae. He worked for White Brothers and Killion Electric. He was a 32nd degree Mason, Knightsville Lodge, and a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Terre Haute.

He was a member of the Van Buren Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the Community Missionary Church.

He is survived by one sister, Fern Marie Riley of Peoria, Ill.; one sister-in-law, Dovi Potter Brown of Clinton, Ind.; and several nieces, nephews and other extended family.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Donna Knowles, who was killed riding her bicycle in 1963; one brother, Forest Raymond Knowles; two sisters, Rema Velma Stout and Mildred Hazel Brown; and one brother, Cecil Knowles, and one sister, Irene Knowles, who died as young children.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Lawson-Slack Funeral Home with the Rev. William Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Calcutta Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 11 a.m. until time of services, with Masonic Services at 12:30 p.m. Graveside military rites will be provided by American Legion Post No. 2 and VFW No. 1127.
