Leroy A. Overman Jr., 79, of Brazil, died Friday, May 14, 2004, at 6:25 p.m. in Clay Health Center of Brazil.
Born May 17, 1924, in Brazil, he was the son of Leroy A. Overman Sr. and Helen Yarde Overman.
He attended school in Indianapolis and served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater on the USS Princeton. He received several commendations including the Heroism Medal. He saved another man's life when their ship was attacked.
He married Charlotte Taylor on June 17, 1950. She survives.
He worked as a machinist for Detroit Diesel Allison in Indianapolis until his retirement in 1976. He and his wife enjoyed square dancing and going to the Forest Park Band Shell for the summer concert series. He was very proud of his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Nathan and Rita Overman, of Brazil; a daughter, Rosetta Mills, of Tampa, Fla.; three grandchildren, Andrew Phegley and his wife, Cisilee, of Brazil, Justin Overman and wife, Melissa, of Indianapolis and Elijah Overman of Brazil; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Phegley, Allison Phegley and Regan Overman; a brother, James Overman, of Indianapolis; three sisters, Janet Zearing, Sandy Jordan and husband, Jack, and Dixie Carlino and husband, Tony, all of Indianapolis; several nieces and nephews and other extended family.
His parents; a brother, Robert Overman; and a son, Thomas Andrew Overman, preceded him in death as an infant.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in French Funeral Home with the Rev. Chester Haypenny and the Rev. Harold Plunkett officiating. Burial will follow in Clearview Cemetery. American Legion Post 2 and VFW 1127 will provide military graveside rites. Visitation will be Tuesday, 4-7 p.m., and Wednesday prior to services.
