Jerry Lee Barrett, 57, of Center Point, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Methodist Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born Oct. 9, 1946, in Brazil, the son of Robert and Dortha Megenhardt Barrett. He was raised in Center Point, attended Ashboro Elementary and graduated from Brazil High School Class of 1964.
He previously worked at Allison's, then at Peabody Coal for 23 years as a heavy equipment operator. When the mine closed at Universal, he began the business known as Barrett and Son Excavating. The last several years, he worked Brazil City to install the sewer treatment plant. He also worked for Center Point and Knightsville water and sewer treatment.
He was a devoted son, husband, dad and grandpa. He enjoyed traveling with family, movies and fishing.
On Sept. 1, 1967, he married Phyllis Shields; she survives.
He is also survived by his father, Robert Barrett of Cory; his mother, Dortha "Dottie" Barrett Urbain; a daughter and son-in-law, Stacie and Scott Ooley of Center Point; a son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Rhonda Barrett of Terre Haute; and his grandchildren, Jacob and Austin Ooley, Tristan and Haliah Barrett, Kyeton and Landon Pettijohn and Michaela Kaiser.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Levi Urbain; and his mother- and father-in-law, Betty and Robert Shields.
Friends may gather Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at French Funeral Home. At his request, cremation will take place, with private family services at a later date.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Center Point Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
