He was born June 27, 1927, in Brazil. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked at Allison Transmissions, retiring in 1981, after 30 years. He was a member and past commander of the VFW No. 201 and a past member of the American Legion Post No. 495.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Edith V. "Gini" Croan Stephens; a son, Jeffrey, and daughter-in-law, Peggy Stephens, of Pekin, Ill; daughters, Vicki and Jerilyn Stephens, both of Indianapolis; a sister, Roberta Wadsworth of Brazil; and a granddaughter, Kaitlyn Stephens.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Thomas; and a brother, Harold "Pewee" Stephens.
Communal services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Washington Park East. Friends of the family may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in Harry Moore Family Mortuaries, Lawrence Chapel, Indianapolis.
