Irene Wanda Howald, 83, of Brazil died at 5:10 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at her son's residence.
Born Jan. 26, 1921, in Brazil, she was the daughter of Herman and Lovina Neese Egener.
She graduated from Brazil High School in 1939 and worked for the old Brazil Clay Company.
On June 30, 1940, she married John A. Howald, who preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 1999. They lived in Indianapolis for 35 years.
She retired from Farm Bureau Insurance after 22 years. Irene and her husband retired to Reelsville in 1982. She was a member of Croys Creek Congregational Christian Church.
She was an accomplished poet and enjoyed writing poetry and attended writing classes in Terre Haute and Brazil.
She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, Herman, Charles and William Egener: two sisters, Esther Cheek Weber and Charlotte Speer; and two grandchildren, Darlene and Steven Hall.
She is survived by three sons, John T. Howald of Franklin, Ind., David and his wife, Bev Howald, of Brazil and Greg and his wife, Carol Howald, of Hoonah, Alaska; a brother, Thomas Egener of Denver, Colo.; six grandsons, Aaron, Jason, Mark, Matt, Kenneth and Jeremy; three granddaughters, Amy Haviland, Jill Mills, and Sarah Howald; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by four sisters-in-law, Eileen Egener, Florence Trout, Helen Howald, and Georgianna Howald.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today at Moore Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. with Pastors Doug Parkey and Warren Whittington officiating. Burial will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery.
