Madge M. Grafe, 87, of Clay City, died July 31, 2004, at Shakamak Good Samaritan Healthcare Facility. She had been a patient there for two days.

She was born July 14, 1917, in Owen County, the daughter of Jon S. and Evaline Hochstetler Smith. She attended school in Coal City. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed doing word puzzles and was an avid NASCAR fan.

She was baptized as a young girl at the Coal City Chuch of Christ. She was a loving mother and was known as "Granny" to many.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Sue Grafe, of Clay City; three grandsons, David Grafe and wife Janell, Jay Grafe and wife Linda, and Steve Grafe and his partner Jeanne Jukes; seven great-grandchildren, Sara, Ryan, Kyle, and Troy Grafe, Lauren Grafe, Logan Jukes, and Jeremy Vossen; and other extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Wanda Grafe; and three brothers, Earl, Herschel, and Clyde Smith.

Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home with David Grafe officiating. Burial will follow at Beech Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday prior to services.
