Melvin R. Lucas, 65, of Terre Haute, formerly of Staunton, died at 3:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
Born in Brazil on Jan. 13, 1939, his parents were Melvin and Doris Watts Lucas Berry. He was a 1957 graduate of Staunton High School.
For 30 years he was employed at AMAX Corp., south of Staunton. He retired in 1995 as a mine supervisor.
An avid race fan, he was associated with the motor racing team of Tony Bettenhausen Jr., until Bettenhausen and his wife were killed in a plane crash.
He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Terre Haute, American Legion Post 2 in Brazil, the 20-year Club of AMAX Corp (he was President), the Indianapolis 500 Old Timers Club, Staunton Baseball League, Indiana High School Athletic Association (he was a basketball referee) and Melvin was a life member of Brazil BPO Elks Lodge 762.
He was an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Connie Barden Rilenge Lucas, whom he married Oct. 10, 1998; three children, Krystal Rilenge, Kayla Rilenge and Benjamin Rilenge, all at home; a sister, Marilyn J. Chrisman of Terre Haute, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, LeRoy and Betty Barden of Sullivan; a brother-in-law, Calvin Barden and wife, Julie, of Lewis; a sister-in-law, Sue Moeller, of Evansville; several nieces, nephews and cousins; two great-nieces; and three great-nephews.
Preceding him in death was his stepfather, Russell J. Berry.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Miller Memorial Chapel with Father Joseph Kernen officiating. Veterans from American Legion and VFW posts will conduct military rites following the services.
Burial will follow in Center Ridge Cemetery at Sullivan.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday prior to the funeral.
