Harold Japeth Doughty, 80 of Brazil, died 6:20 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute.
Born on Nov. 6, 1923, in Clinton, Ind., he was the son of the late Charles and Phoebe Martin Doughty. After graduating from high school, he attended Indiana University and then joined the Army where he served as a sergeant with the 902nd Army Air Force Base Unit from December 1942 to February of 1946.
After returning to Clinton, in early 1948 he met Juanita Booker and they were married on Nov. 10, 1948. They were married for 56 years. While living in Clinton, he worked for Doughty Furniture, was the Director of Civil Defense and from 1949 until 1968, served as a Volunteer Fireman. He was a member of the First Christian Church. From 1968 to 1986, they lived in Florida where he worked as a City Dispatcher. After moving to Brazil, he became a member of American Legion Post 2.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita Doughty; one son and his wife, Carl Terry and Patty Doughty of Walnut Grove, California; one daughter and her husband, Kay and Jerry Smith of Terre Haute; six granddaughters, Elizabeth and Michelle Doughty of Walnut Grove, Calif., Ella Smith and Nacole Hillhouse of Terre Haute, Gina Kay Hooper of Dana, Indiana, Jody Ann Goldner of Clinton; and eight great-grandchildren.
Following Mr. Doughty and his family's request, no public funeral services will be held. Moore Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
