Walter C. Schafer, 92, of Bridgeport, Ill., died at 5:40 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, in Lawrence Community Healthcare in Bridgeport, Ill.

Born April 17, 1912, in Clay City, he was the son of Daniel Schafer and Ida Lambrick Shafer. He was married to Maxine Scott Schafer who died March 7, 1996.

He belonged to Martz Evangelical United Brethren Church and also attended Shiloh Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer and laborer.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Freeman, and husband, Leroy, of Bridgeport; a brother, Elsworth Schafer, of Clay City; five grandchildren, Tim, Lorre, Michael, David and Shannon; and four great-grandchildren, Brittany, Tiia, Rachel and Taneli.

Two brothers, Herman and Herschel, preceded him in death.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Cunningham Funeral Home, Bridgeport, with the Rev. Dwight McDaniel officiating. Burial will be in Bridgeport City Cemetery.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
