Lillian G. Elder, 88, of Brazil died at 11:49 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, in Union Hospital, Terre Haute.
A resident of the Brazil area most of her life, she was born in Clay County on Feb. 6, 1916. Her parents were Lawrence and Ora West Garrigus and she was a 1934 graduate of Brazil High School.
She was a member of the Fairview Christian Church and participated in its Women's Missionary Group. She had also been affiliated with the Clay County Historical Society.
She was an organizer of the Clay County Food Pantry and volunteered her work for several years until her health began failing. She was an avid reader, loved baking pies and always welcomed family and friends into her home.
On Oct. 11, 1941, she married Gene Elder and he preceded her in death on April 26, 1999. Others preceding her included five brothers and three sisters, Ralph, Gene, Earl, Arthur, Ernest, Lucille, Margaret and Anna May.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean Lynette Garrigus and her husband, Bill; four stepgrandchildren, Suzanne Jones and husband, Chris, of St. Paul, Minn., Linda Hill and husband, David, and Diane Garrigus, of Cornelius, Ore., and Patrick Garrigus in Washington state; four stepgreat-grandsons, Sam Duncan, Brian, Jesse and Scott Hill; a sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Merrill Oaks of Franklin, Ind.; three sisters-in-law, Alta Garrigus of Charlotte, N.C., Katherine Elder of Baton Rouge, La., and Rose Elder of Staunton; 22 nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Miller Memorial Chapel with Brother Doug Parkey and Rev. Gary Scroggins officiating. Burial will be in Bee Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fairview Christian Church. Envelopes will be available in the funeral chapel.
