Joseph M. Carpenter, 90, of Cloverland, Ind., died at 2:20 a.m. on Feb. 17, 2005, at St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Brazil.
He was born Dec. 18, 1914, to Bert and Dora Wagner Carpenter, who preceded him in death along with a brother, LeRoy Carpenter.
He married Sophia Mitchell on June 20, 1937, and she survives him.
He was a 1934 graduate of Brazil High School. During his working years, he owned and operated Brazil Concrete Block Company. He served as both the Clay County and Brazil Assessor each for four-year terms. He was the Superintendent of Forest Park for several years, and worked for Froderman Chevrolet and the Big Ben Coal Company. With his father, he owned and operated the Sun Flower Automobile Race Track in Cloverland during the late 1920s and early 1930s. In his free time he enjoyed bowling and trap shooting. Some of his fondest times were spent in Colorado and Canada where he loved to hunt and fish.
Along with his wife, survivors include son Ken Carpenter and his fiancee Jackie Cail of Evanston, Ind.; three grandchildren, Kenny Joe and fiancee Jonna Stack of Evansville, Ind., Kurt and wife Cindy Carpenter of Jasper, Ind., Kathryn and husband Judd Counsell of Brooklyn, N.Y.; six great-grandchildren, Kyla Carpenter, Brandon Carpenter and Sara Carpenter of Jasper, Ind., Joseph and Kaylin Carpenter of Evansville, Ind. and Oscar Counsell of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Services will be at French Funeral Home at 4 p.m. on Saturday with Pastor Dave Mallinak officiating. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until the time of services on Saturday. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery.
