Herschel Cecil Fretz, 91, of Center Point died Friday, March 4, 2005, at 2:55 a.m. at Holly Hills Healthcare Facility.
Born Oct. 7, 1913, in Clay County, he was the son of Anthony and Ora LaSalle Fretz.
He was a graduate of Ashboro High School and married Margaret Clarke Fretz on June 18, 1938.They lived on the same farm south of Saline for 67 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Cecil retired from Pillsbury in Terre Haute. After retirement, he worked at the Kroger store in Brazil.
He had worked for Arketex in Brazil.
Cecil loved gardening, woodworking, flying, fishing, music, traveling, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Donald Fretz; two brothers, Paul Fretz and Ralph Fretz; and two sisters, Vera Sharp and Bernice Wegner.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Suzy Fretz of Center Point and Robert and Mary Lou Fretz of Freedom; two daughters, Virginia Fretz of Center Point and Beverly Smith of Independence, Mo.; grandchildren, Joe Fretz, Terri Fretz, David Steward, Daniel Smith and Jon Smith; great-grandchildren, Austin Fretz, Corbin Fretz, Alisha, Anthony, Drew and Andrea Steward; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Elsie Dunn, Virginia Stant, Norma Rector and Doris Romas and husband, Gayle.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home with the Rev. Chester Hapenny officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The American Legion and VFW of Clay City will provide military graveside services. Visitation will be Monday, 4-8 p.m. and Tuesday prior to services.
