Rick L. Mullinix, 52 of Brazil, passed away May 24, 2005, at 1:45 p.m. at St. Vincent Clay Hospital in the emergency room. He had been ill due to pancreatic cancer for a short time.
He was born July 24, 1952, in Clay County, the son of Arthur R. "Ross" Mullinix and Wilma J. Meadows Mullinix. He was a child of an Air Force family, so they moved frequently, living in several states. He graduated from Maconaquah High School, Class of 1970 in Bunker Hill, IN.
He has lived in the Brazil area all his adult life. He graduated from Indiana State University in 1993 with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education. He also competed his Masters Degree. He was currently teaching 6th grade at Maplewood Elementary School in Wayne Township in Indianapolis. He had been there for eleven years. He received the Seniors Choice Award several times from his former students. He was a member of the Class Room Teachers Association.
He was a member of the McKinley Hill Church of Christ. He was a member of the American Legion Post #2; the Clay County YMCA; Moose Lodge Number 780; and a past member of the Brazil Elks Lodge. He had been a volunteer with the Van Buren Volunteer Fire Department. He was one of the charter members of the "CLub House" and was a loyal and devoted friend to that group.He served in the Indiana National Guard for 24 years, retiring as a Major. He was the company commander at the Brazil base in the past. Rick was quite proud of his tour of duty in Romania where his company was involved with building a hospital. He also served in many staff positions with the 38th S&T BN and the 38th MSB.
He is survived by his daughter, Brogyn Mullinix and son Eric Mullinix and his daughter in law Kim all of Brazil; grandchildren, Austin Mullinix, Whitney Winn and Josey Parr; his stepfather, Jesse A. Hill; three brothers and two sisters, Greg Mullinix and wife Janine, Mark Mullinix and wife Cathy and Randy Hill and wife Mary, all of Brazil; Kathy Kellum and husband Bob of Terre Haute; Tammy Jaeger and husband Pete of Seelyville; several nieces and nephews; uncles and aunts, Robert and Marsha Meadows of Weekiwachi, FL; Marjorie and Lloyd Cooper, Charles "Zeb" and Rosalie Mullenix, Tom and Peg Mullenix, and Mary Frances and Clay Warren; and many other extended family.He was preceded in death by his father Arthur "Ross" Mullinix, February 12, 1958; his mother Wilma Mullinix Hill February 27, 1969.
Services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. at French Funeral Home with Brother Rick Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Calcutta Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 p.m. and again Friday prior to services.
The National Guard Honors Unit will provide military graveside rites. Honorary pallbearers will be Doug Williams, Jimmy Grey, Jeff Cope, Jeff Chamberlain, Mike Cheek, Chris Greenwood, Jeff Schutte, Noel Williams and Devon Chamberlain.
The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the McKinley Hill Church of Christ for their chidren's missions fund, or to the Maplewood Elementary School for "Rick's Angel Fund" to assist children. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
