John F. "Toby" Lawrence, 69, of Center Point, died at 7:00 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005 at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born in Poland, Indiana, June 12, 1935 to Leonard and Ethel Carpenter Lawrence. He was best known for being the attendant at the Zephyr Filling Station on the East end of Brazil. He was also popular amongst the kids for handing out candy and gum while filling their parents automobiles. For a short time prior to working at the Zephyr Station he worked as an attendant for the Spur Filling Station. When he was not working he enjoyed listening to karaoke, watching stock car races, especially the Indianapolis 500, and going on long country drives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Carl, Paul and Jack Lawrence; and a sister Helen Marie Lawrence.
He is survived by a long time companion Betty Matherly, a daughter Debra Lowe and husband Phillip of West Terre Haute, one granddaughter Brittney Lowe also of West Terre Haute, three brothers, Glen Lawrence, Jim Lawrence and wife Mary and Don Lawrence and wife Shirley all of Brazil.
Visitation will be at Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave., Brazil, Tuesday, June 14, 2005 from 4-8 p.m. At the families request cremation will follow. Visit www.lawson-millerchapel.com to light a candle in his memory.
