Max Thomas Brown, 71, of Terre Haute, passed away unexpectedly September 4, 2005, at his residence.

He was born October 7, 1933, in Vigo County the son of Virgil and Ruth Harvey Brown. He graduated from Prairie Creek High School, Class of 1951. He became a member of the Laborers Union and worked as a hod carrier. He was a 50 -year member of Local 204, and served on the Union Delegates in the past. He took pride in his work and was known in the past as the "King of the Hod carriers" to his friends. He would explain in detail the many jobs he worked on including, the Cayuga Power Plant, many buildings on campus at ISU, the Vigo County Public Library, and many schools in the Wabash Valley. In 1979, he retired from his chosen profession due to health problems. Following retirement, he devoted his time to gardening, cooking, canning, and caring for his animals. He at one time had a large herd of goats that he lovingly cared for and called each one by name. In his later years, he loved just being at the "home place" with the simple pleasures of sitting in the swing, or mowing the grass. He was a steadfast and loyal friend to many.

In the past he had attended the Assembly of God Church in West Terre Haute, with his mother and sister. He had a strong faith his God and knew The Word.

He is survived by his devoted wife Martha Hogue Brown of Terre Haute; his two daughters and sons in law, Debra and Louis F. Britton of Terre Haute, Susie and Dr. Charles French of Brazil; two sons and daughters in law, Thomas and Andrea Brown of Riley, and Bill and Sandra Brown of Terre Haute; five step children, Harold Long and wife Josephine of Parke County; Gary Long and wife Angela of Brazil; Connie McBride and husband Jim and Cathy McCloud and husband Darrell all of Staunton; Karen Bryan and husband Terry of Brazil; 10 grandchildren, Louis J. Britton, Laura Britton, Leslie Britton, Justin Garzolini, Katie French, Shelby French, Brock Brown, Bret Brown, Bryce Brown, and Josey Johnston; 16 step-grandchildren, Tammy Pearce, Teresa Jenkins, Timothy Roberts, Troy Roberts, Melissa Long, Betty Long, Sondra Long, Shawna Long, David Winn, Gary Long, Jr., Beth Long, Elizabeth Long, Catlin Long, Grace Long, Richard McCloud, Kevin McCloud, Lacey Bryan; twenty two great-grandchildren; one brother and sister in law, Jim and Betty Brown of Paris, IL; four sisters in law, Alice Brown, Shirley Brown, Roberta Brown, and Joan Brown; many nieces, nephews and a large extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Eva Roberts, and Irene "Teenie" Brown; five brothers, Wayne Brown, Robert Brown, Norman Brown, Phillip Brown, and Clarence Brown.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at DeBaun Funeral Home, Springhill Chapel, with Pastor Dennis Leek officiating. Burial will follow at New Harmony Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to the American Red Cross, Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
