John Richard Layer, 74, Johnson City, TN, formerly of Terre Haute, went to be with the Lord on September 26, 2005 in Shelby County, KY, the result of an automobile accident.

He was a Field Superintendent with the Daniels Company. Born January 4, 1931 in Wayne County, MI, he was the son of Floyd Layer and Foster Pratt Layer.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Valyndia C. Layer. Survivors include his wife, Betty J. Fagg Layer, whom he married June 12, 1954; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Gina Layer, Terre Haute, IN; and Daniel and Deborah Layer, Johnson City, IN; one sister Patricia Heinz, Austria; one brother, Floyd Layer, Jr., Terre Haute, IN; one aunt, Martena Layer; and seven grandchilden, Jacob Layer; Kamee Wilson and husband, Destry; Nathan Layer; Christopher Layer; Joshua Layer; Joseph Layer; and Courtney Layer. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, James Edward Layer and Jack Layer.

He was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Johnson City, Central Masonic Lodge #541 in Brazil, and Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute. He was a U.S. Arny veteran, serving in the Korean War.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Avenue, with Dr. Reggie Weems officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn Cemetery. Visitation is from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday with Masonic service at 7:00 p.m.
