Mildred R. (Davis) Sonnefield, 81, of rural Poland died at 12:30 a.m. Monday, December 19, 2005, at the Clay County Health Center. She was a retired schoolteacher of South Putnam School Corporation, serving 23 years from 1963-1986. She also taught briefly at Brazil High School from 1949-1953 and Eminence High School from 1948-1949. She taught Home Economics, Family and Consumer Sciences and Child Development.
She was born on February 15, 1924, in Dick Johnson Township in Clay County to Claude H. Davis and Anna (Webster) Bridgewater Davis who both preceded her in death. She graduated from Brazil High School in 1942; she attended Indiana State Teacher's College and also obtained a master's degree from Indiana State University. She married Roy W. Sonnefield in 1949 and became a housewife and teacher and enjoyed many years on a rural farm in Cass Township, Clay County.
Mildred was an active member of Zion United Church of Christ in Poland for over 55 years, serving as a teacher, elder and consistory member. She was also a member of the Women's Guild. She enjoyed traveling with her family. She participated in the church and local community choirs. She collected antiques, depression and cut glass and her love was Haviland China. She had sold her antiques in Brazil and Terre Haute Antique malls. She was a devoted mother and teacher. She also volunteered at the Brazil, Clay County Food Panty. She worked on the 1942 Brazil High School Reunion Committee and volunteered her time to the Clay County Historical Society, Preservation Society and the Clay County Civic Theater.
She is survived by two sons, James S. Sonnefield and wife Sue of Marion, IN; and Robert D. Sonnefield of Poland; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Sonnefield of Poland; two granddaughters, Amanda R. Sonnefield of Muncie and Lauren E. Sonnefield of Marion; a grandson, Christopher Sonnefield of Poland, a niece and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1998; a son, John David Sonnefield in 2002; and a brother, Willard L. Davis.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 22, 2005 at noon at French Funeral Home with Pastor Jennifer Amy Dressler officiating. Burial will follow in Poland Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be two hours prior to services.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Zion United Church of Christ in Poland. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
