Robert L. White Sr., 93, of Greencastle, formerly of Brazil, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2006, at The Waters of Greencastle. He was born May 11, 1912, in Terre Haute to Ernest and Emma (Giffel) White.
He graduated from Garfield High School. On September 27, 1931, he married Helen C. Wassel. They were the oldest married couple in the Indianapolis Archdiocese until her death in 2004, being married 73 years. Bob was the district manager for the Terre Haute Star before working in the family owned White Beverage Beer Distributing Company at 959 Poplar St. in Terre Haute in the late '40s. While living in Pimento the family started up the Transit Terminal Trucking Company where he worked until he moved to Arlington, Virginia. While in Arlington, he managed Peoples Drug Store. He retired in 1976 and returned to Terre Haute. He lived in Ce-Mar Estates and attended Sacred Heart Church. In 1985, they moved to Brazil, attended Annunciation Church and enjoyed playing bingo and collecting coupons. In 2000, they moved to Greencastle to be with their son. Mr. White was a member of TPA and Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his wife Helen.
Surviving is a daughter, Joan Whittaker and husband Richard of Spotsylvania, VA., a son Robert White Jr. and wife Debi of Greencastle, 21 grandchildren and 58 great-grandchildren and a large extended family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday February 4, 2006, at Annunciation Church in Brazil, with Father Stephen Jarrell officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Terre Haute. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at French Funeral Home with Rosary at 7:00 p.m.
