George R. Krauchi, 78, of Clay City passed away at 3:30 a.m., February 11, 2006, at his home following an extended illness. He was born in Clay City on April 21, 1927, to Rufus and Mercedes (Hale) Krauchi. Mr. Krauchi graduated from Clay City High School with the class of 1945. He attended the First United Church of Christ in Clay City.
He was a member of the Linton Elks Lodge and the Linton Moose Lodge, the Clay City American Legion Post 6606, a lifetime member of the Clay City VFW Post 2, Clay City Masonic Lodge 85, Terre Haute Scottish Rite, Clay City Eastern Star and the United Mine Workers.
Mr. Krauchi worked as a mechanic for the Peabody Coal Mine for 18 years. He also owned Standard and Shell gas stations in Clay City for several years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard Krauchi.
Survivors include his wife, Mary F. Wilson Krauchi; a son, Lynn Krauchi and wife, Amy, of Mt. Carmel, Ill.,; a daughter, Jane Gaston and husband, Jim, of clay City; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; two nephews; and a large extended family.
Services will be at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 14, 2006, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Sam White officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 8 a.m. until time of services.
