Larry Eugene Vanes, age 71, of Flora, Illinois, and formerly of Brazil died early Sunday morning, June 18, 2006, at his residence in Flora.

He was born May 31, 1935, in Brazil as the son of John and Hyla Urwin Vanes. Following high school he worked as a police officer, Greyhound Bus driver and an auctioneer until his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army from May of 1958 until his honorable discharge in March of 1964. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 541, Indianapolis Scottish Rite and the International King Midget Car Club. He enjoyed traveling and his restored antique vehicles.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Bill Vanes.

He is survived by his daughters, Cristy Welty and her husband Kevin of Flora, Illinois, and Lee Ann Barker of Milan, Michigan, and one brother, John F. "Jack" Vanes of North Bend, Oregon.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Moore Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday with Nick Robertson officiating.

Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Should friends so desire, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to New Hope Christian Church, 4309 Xenia Iola Rd., Xenia IL 62899. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
