Robert H. Lawson, 77, passed away July 31, 2006 at 10:10 a.m. in Union Hospital at Terre Haute.
Born Dec. 12, 1928, in Clay City, he was the son of Herbert Lawson and Bernice Whitmar Lawson. He was a retired district manager with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, prior to this, he was owner of Lawson Distributors Inc.
He served in the U.S. Army. Active in Democratic politics, he served at the Democratic precinct committeemen , former County Councilman, was presently serving on the Harrison Township Advisory Board and for over 25 years he served as Secretary Treasurer of Harry S. Truman Club.
He was the former promoter for Terre Haute Action Track from 1981-84, former president of Wabash Valley Auto Racing Fan club, worked for STP Corporation, worked for the State Athletic Commission as an inspector for Pro Wrestling and Boxing, received the Sagamore of the Wabash Valley, also a Kentucky Colonel and a member of IOPO.
He was preceded in death by both parents, grandchild, Robert H. Lawson III, a brother, John Lawson and a sister Helen Williams.
He was married Sept. 24, 1953, to Nala Chopson Lawson of Terre Haute and she survives. Also surviving are three sons, Robert H. Lawson Jr. (Veronica "Ronni") of Terre Haute; John D. Lawson (Leah) of Terre Haute and R. Michael Lawson of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Diana Stultz of Louisville, Ky.; sisters, Hope Schopmeyer of Terre Haute and Irma Lee of Spencer, Ind.; grandchildren, Carter Lawson of Terre Haute, Elizabeth Lawson of Wisconsin; Megan Elliott of Port Orange, Fla., Jaime Johnson and Darrell Johnson and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at DeBaun Springhill Chapel Thursday, Aug. 3, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ernie Rush officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug. 2, 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Lawn Cemetery.
