Christina Kate Gasway, 83, died at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21. A longtime resident of Brazil, she recently resided at Westminister Village in Terre Haute.
Born in Ryegate, Vermont, to William and Elsie Carbee, she graduated from Wells River High School in her home state and the Concord College of Business in Concord, New Hampshire, before serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 to 1945. Upon leaving the Marine Corps, she lived and worked briefly in New York City, before relocating to Chicago where she met Robert W. Gasway of Brazil. The two married in 1947 and returned to Brazil where they established Gasway Insurance Unlimited, and she worked as an agent. Robert preceded her in death in 1996.
Chris enjoyed reading, travel, friends and famiy.
She is survived by two sons and their spouses, Robert and Barbara and Richard and Rhea of Brazil; two daughters and their spouses: Patricia Gasway and husband, James Fisher, of Brazil, and Pamala Gasway and husband, Peter Carino of Terre Haute. She enjoyed her five grandchildren, Christi Brown, Natalie Shonk, Clay, Casey and Caleb Gasway; her nine great-grandchildren, Ian, Ezra, Audrey, Kaleb, Cooper, Will, Colin, Caden and Caleb Jr.; and several nieces and nephews. Her only living sister, Irene Kaiser, lives in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Chris was a parishioner of Annunciation Catholic Church in Brazil and a longtime member of the 7:30 Home Economics Club.
Visitation will be at Lawson-Miller Chapel in Brazil on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, from 4 until 7 p.m. with Rosary taking place at 6:15 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Annunciation Church, Thursday, Aug. 24, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Steve Jerroll officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Clay County Humane Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
