Errett W. Miller, 43 of Staunton, who died Sept. 4, 2006, was killed in the line of duty while on a fire department response for the Posey Township Volunteeer Fire Department.

He was born Sept. 9, 1962, in Vigo County, the son of Jerry Miller and Gloria DeSmith Miller. He was raised in Staunton and he graduated from Staunton High School, Class of 1980. July 3, 1982 he married Jacquelyn Lawrence, she survives.

Errett had been an active member of the Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years. He was currently serving as the Assistant Fire Chief. He had participated in many continuing education seminars and had been a loyal member of the volunteer group.

In his lifetime he had worked for Great Dane, Putnamville Correctional Facility, John & John Co., Kessler Construction and was currently working for Wetnight Construction.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and the serving on the Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed helping out other volunteer departments when he could and was a loyal member of the group.

Survivors include his wife, Jackie Miller; their children, Chad Miller and wife, Angela; Tracy Miller and fiance, Steve Verbonitz and Danielle Miller and fiance, Jeff Braswell; granddaughter Raelyn Verbonitz; his father, Jerry Miller and his wife Ruth of Hanes City, Fla.; his mother Gloria Miller of Brazil; three sisters, Evelyn Brown and husband Glen, Roselyn Novotney and Amy Giltner and husband, Cory; several nieces and nephews and other extended family.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the National Guard Armory with Posey Township Fire Chief Larry Temple and Chaplain Pete Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Active casket bearers will be Matt Barker, Jason Slesinski, Jennifeer Market, Sam Riddell, Meri Barker, Richard Munoz, Kevin Orme, Eddy Treadway, Tim Stearley, Cody Bernard, Jon Yocom and Jim Smith. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at French Funeral Home and again Friday at the armory one hour prior to services. Those wishing to donate can visit any Riddell National Bank branch and ask to donate to the Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department Donation Fund Errett Miller.
