Garland V. Baker

Garland V. Baker, 80, of Brazil passed away October 23, 2006 at 5:40pm in his residence. He was born October 17, 1926 in Vigo County in the area known as Burnett. He was the son of James Matthew Baker and Opal Day Baker. He graduated from Otter Creek High School, Class of 1944. He entered into the U.S. Navy serving from 1944-1946. February 15, 1947 he married Ruth Doris Burkett Baker. She preceded him in death on March 26, 1996. When he returned home from the service, he attended Indiana State University, graduating with a B.S. Degree in Chemistry. He worked at the Seagram's Company in Lawrenceburg, IN as a quality controller for several years. He later began working for Anaconda, later known as Alcan, in the quality control department and then later worked as a maintenance supervisor retiring in 1985.

He was a long time member of the Rio Grande Baptist Church serving in the past as a trustee and has served as Treasurer for the past 15 years. He was an active member of the Clay County Historical Society and was trustee of the Poland Chapel; He was a member of the DAV Commanders Club; the NRA; the LST Association #1062 IN and the National LST; the American Legion #104; the VFW; the North Terre Haute Crime Patrol; the Otter Creek High School Reunion Group and the Clay County Parks Association. Garland enjoyed fishing, hunting, feeding the birds and squirrels and spending time with friends playing Euchre. June 28, 1997 he married Wilmadean Spelbring Schepper Baker, she survives. He was always a devoted dad and grandpa.

Survivors include his wife Wilmadean Baker; three daughters Carolyn Kumpf and husband Bob of Brazil, Patty Garry of Greenwood, and Connie Little and husband Steve of Mooresville; step-children, Don Schepper and wife Joyce of Carbon, Judy Wallace and husband Glen of Plymouth, and Gretchen Rhoades and husband Doug of West Terre Haute; grandchildren Paul and Chandra Kumpf, Phillip and Charity Kumpf, Jenny Garry, Joseph Garry, Caitlin Little, Chris Schepper, Rich Larkin, Jim Larkin, Bob Larkin, Christina Rhoades, Dustin Rhoades; great-grandchildren, Caleb Kumpf, Cameron Kumpf, Abigail Kumpf, Aliviah Garry. Jacob, Benjamin and Josh Larkin, and Taylor Schepper; two sisters Agnes Havens and Mary Pastorious and husband Max all of Terre Haute; brother and sisters in law Tom and Anne Burkett and Alyce Burkett; many nieces and nephews and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Ruth Doris Baker; two sisters Beatrice Jones and Violet Webb; one granddaughter Sarah "Cera" Garry.

Services will be held Friday at the Lawson-Miller Chapel at 11:00am with Pastor Bob Studivant officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery. Military graveside services will be provided by American Legion Post #104. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8pm.
