Ammonia leak threatens northern part of county

Tuesday, December 10, 2002

Fire, police and medical personnel were called to Schopmeyer Farm Supply early this morning.

According to the Clay County Sheriff's Dept., leaking anhydrous ammonia was reported at 2 a.m.

Emergency personnel were on the scene, at the intersection of CR 1200N and SR 59, for about two hours.

The leak may have been caused by an attempted theft of anhydrous ammonia, used in the production of methamphetamine, an illegal drug, police said.

No injuries were reported.

Van Buren Volunteer Fire Dept., Clay County Emergency Management and Athens Ambulance were called to the scene.
