Filing dates have been established for the 2003 election. Anyone wanting to file as a candidate for eligible offices in the City of Brazil next year can file beginning Jan. 22 at the election office on the second floor of the Clay County Court House. Candidates can file until noon Feb. 21.
Brazil City offices open for election next year are mayor, clerk-treasurer and all five seats on the city council. Also open for election in 2003 are town clerk-treasurer and town councils for Knightsville, Harmony, Carbon, Center Point, Staunton and Clay City. All the town councils have three members except Harmony, with four members.
According to Election Deputy Beth Mallinak, town clerk-treasurer and town council candidates may file by party or as independents. If they file their declaration of candidacy by party they can start Jan. 1 and have until noon, Aug. 1.
Candidates filing as independents can start Jan. 1 but only have until noon of July 1. To file as an independent, the candidate must have a petition with the signatures of registered voters equal to 2 percent of the secretary of state votes in their election district from the previous election.
Smaller towns, with a population of less than 3,500, do not have a primary election. That's the reason for the filing date differences. Any one with questions regarding election filing procedures or dates may contact Beth Mallinak at the Election Office during business hours.
